Once a company/government department has decided to host a CEED project, here are some points to consider before registering a project (to gain maximum benefit):

  • Identify a specific research, development or improvement problem/issue that, once completed, will provide a good return on investment ... and a training opportunity for the student/s involved
  • Most projects are completed by individual students.  However, consider whether students from multiple disciplines/areas could add extra value to the project (working in a team)
  • Shortlist the best project options/ideas
  • Consider 'staging' large or complex projects over a number of semesters (using different students for each stage) or starting the project early over summer vacation
  • Appoint one or more people in your company to be the project contact and student supervisor/mentor.  Note that the supervisor needs to be available throughout the duration of the project – ie not on annual/extended leave, or required to travel regularly (appoint a co-supervisor in these cases).
  • Students need guidance throughout their project – at least one progress meeting per week (2-3 meetings in the early stages of the project, until they are ‘settled’ in).
  • Gain internal company approval for the project
  • Register interest and project/company details with CEED

How to register Company/Government projects with CEED

Provide a 1-2 page outline of the project, company/contact details, plus preferred timing of project.  There are two easy ways to register:

What happens after I register my company project with CEED?

CEED will contact the nominated company person to discuss and verify the project details and preferred timing.  Once the project is verified, it is advertised on the CEED website, with an application ‘close date’ – to see the list of projects available now, click here.  CEED will notify/advertise the project to the appropriate students at UQ, QUT and USQ ... and our network of academic contacts.

Once your project has been advertised to students, the following process takes place:

  • CEED receives all student applications on your behalf.
  • After the application ‘close date’, CEED emails you the resumes of all applicants
  • You choose which student/s you'd like to interview
  • CEED organises the interviews with your selection of student/s, at your premises (or at another location, if preferred). A site/factory tour is recommended as part of the interview process, if appropriate
  • You choose the student best suited to your project and company cultureCameron Sneddon, Austral Bricks project
  • CEED makes an offer to the student, on your behalf
  • CEED confirm the student's acceptance of your offer (or discuss alternatives, if the student declines)
  • You and the student decide a mutually convenient start date for the project
  • A CEED contract is issued for signing, confirming all of the project conditions.  The student is also required to sign a contract.
  • The student is given an induction session by CEED, and training in project planning and management – close to their project start date
  • The student commences their project and attends any internal company, HR and/or safety induction sessions
  • The student develops a detailed project plan within the first two or three weeks, in conjunction with the company and university supervisors - also guided by CEED
  • CEED monitors the student’s progress from start to finish, to help ensure a good project result for the student and the company.  CEED provides assistance, troubleshooting and advice as required, throughout the project.
