Industry-based research needs to be assessed by QUT regarding its suitability for a Master of IT or Engineering (Research) project. CEED will assist companies with this process. QUT have provided the following information, as a guide:
"The Master of Engineering or Information Technology (Research) aims to provide specialist education in
engineering or information technology through a program which involves either
an original contribution to knowledge or an original application of existing knowledge."
Some of the criteria used by QUT for assessment of the research area/project are:
- Originality. As stated above, for the Masters (as opposed to the PhD) an original application of existing knowledge is quite acceptable, but it definitely should not be just a repeat or implementation of work that has been completed by somebody else.
- Scholarly. This means that the research topic should have some wider implications and be suitable for writing up in a scholarly journal and, of course, an academic thesis.
- Substantial in size. The project needs to represent at least one year of full-time research activity (up to two years' full-time work).
When it comes to setting up a specific project, CEED organises a meeting at QUT, so the company can discuss options with an appropriate academic supervisor, in the early stages. CEED also assists the company with development of a research plan / proposal, which QUT will require.
