Project Ideas for IT Students

IT students have a wide range from skills and interests.  There are those who love straight programming, games/entertainment development, web application development, databases.  Or those who like interaction with users (business analysis / information systems), and others who like to work on electronics, PLC or microprocessor programming (software, telecommunications or computer systems engineering).

So, it's hard to generalise.  However, here are some project ideas that are suitable (and achievable) for IT / Software / Computer Systems Engineering-type students (if your idea is not here, please contact Deidre at CEED to discuss your requirements):

Application design & development – Web-based, Web Services, Multimedia, mobile applications, Object-oriented programming.  Languages include VB.Net, C, C++, C#, Java, Python, Unix/Linux
Networking / data security, encryption / cryptography
Business Process Modeling/Management (BPM) Data communications
Enterprise-wide systems - development, improvement, management (incl. SAP) Data mining and analysis
Database development or data migration (SQL, Oracle, MS Access) Data warehousing
Games / interactive entertainment - prototyping, GUI design, animation
Interactive training system for staff / contractors - design & development, update, upgrade
Visual imaging - prototype development (engineering) Knowledge management /
MS SharePoint - development
Software programming associated with electronics - circuit boards, PLCs, microprocessors Embedded systems development
Some of our clients are now utilising the 'Agile' software development methodology - which seems to be working very well for them.

This is a still new methodology for many IT students, and they are keen to learn it.  Students are familiar with 'waterfall' and other methods for software development too.
Research and selection of appropriate off-the-shelf software, to integrate with existing systems
